The Artemision is one of Syracuse's lesser-known archaeological gems — the remains of an Ionic temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, discovered by archaeologist Paolo Orsi in 1910. Dating to the 5th century BC, it was a substantial structure measuring 59 by 25 metres, with six columns across the front and up to 16 running down the sides. What makes it special is that it was built directly over an even older sacred site, layering centuries of religious history into a single spot. If you're into ancient Greek archaeology beyond the usual highlights, this one rewards the detour.
