Fountain of Diana

The Fontana di Diana sits at the center of Piazza Archimede in Ortigia, the ancient island heart of Siracusa, surrounded by buzzing cafés and shops. The fountain tells a mythological story in stone — Diana is shown transforming the nymph Arethusa into a spring to protect her from the river god Alpheus, flanked by tritons and sea creatures. It's one of those spots you just stumble into and end up staring at longer than expected. Built in the early 20th century, it's a surprisingly dramatic piece of sculpture hiding in plain sight on a lively piazza.
