Standing at the foot of La Rambla where it meets the port, the Columbus Monument is a 60-metre iron column topped with a statue of Christopher Columbus, built for Barcelona's 1888 World Exhibition. You can ride the lift up to the viewing platform for a sweeping 360° panorama of the city, the coastline, and the sea — one of those views that genuinely stops you mid-sentence. It was designed by Gaietà Buïgas and remains one of the few monuments in the world where Columbus is pointing directly out to sea.
