Cappella Bonajuto

Tucked into the ancient labyrinth of the Civita district on Via Vittorio Emanuele, this tiny chapel is a rare Byzantine survivor hiding inside a Sicilian Baroque city. Built somewhere between the 6th and 9th centuries AD, it sits within the Bonajuto palace and dates back over a thousand years before most of what surrounds it. Look up and you'll spot its small dome and intricate stonework — a completely different architectural language from the grand Baroque facades just steps away. It's one of those spots that stops you in your tracks once you realize what you're actually looking at.
