The Croatian National Theatre Split has been putting on shows since 1893, making it one of the oldest surviving theatres in Dalmatia. When it opened, it seated 1,000 people — an astonishing number for a city of just 16,000 at the time, and briefly the largest theatre in all of Southeast Europe. Today it still runs a full opera, drama, and ballet ensemble, so if you're around when something's on, it's absolutely worth catching a performance in this historically loaded venue.
