Ponte di San Francesco di Paola

Attraction· 3 min from marina (217m)

The Ponte di San Francesco di Paola is a historic swing bridge inaugurated on May 22, 1887, spanning the navigable canal that connects the Mar Grande to the Mar Piccolo — a 375-meter-long, 73-meter-wide channel that literally splits Taranto's old city from the new. What makes it special is watching the bridge open to let ships pass through, a working piece of 19th-century engineering still doing its job today. It's one of those spots where you stop, look around, and realize the whole city was built around this single strip of water.
