The USS Recruit is one of the quirkiest military artifacts you'll find anywhere — a full-scale landlocked Navy ship that never touched water, built purely to train sailors on deck procedures right in the middle of what's now Liberty Station. Designated a California State Historic Landmark, this 'dummy' destroyer sits frozen in time as a reminder of the Naval Training Center that once operated here from WWI through 1997.
