Santa Maria

This is Cagliari's Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta e Santa Cecilia, the city's main duomo sitting prominently in the Castello hilltop quarter. Built originally in the Pisan Romanesque style in the 13th century, it's been layered with Baroque additions over the centuries, giving it a fascinating mix of influences inside. The interior holds some real surprises, including elaborately carved pulpits and the Chapel of Saint Saturnino, dedicated to Cagliari's patron saint, with its 33 decorated niches.
