Fort Manoel is an 18th-century Knights of Malta fortress sitting on its own island just off Gżira, giving it a dramatic, moat-like separation from the mainland that makes it feel genuinely removed from the modern world. The views across Marsamxett Harbour toward Valletta are hard to beat, and the military architecture — thick limestone bastions, grand gates, and all — tells a story most of Malta's busier attractions gloss over. It's one of those places that rewards a slow wander rather than a rushed tick-off.
