Frequently Asked Questions

Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. For damage it doesn't cover, your liability is usually limited to the security deposit, except where the operator's terms say otherwise. Operator terms: The owner insures the yacht and equipment against fire, marine and collision risks and third party damage, and against loss or damage above an excess amount that is left blank in the text.
Do I need a sailing licence in Greece?
Not if you add a skipper — this boat offers one, who holds the licence. Generally, though: Two crew with proof of competence are required — a skipper holding an ICC or national equivalent and a co-skipper who signs a declaration of sailing experience.
What sailing experience does my crew need?
Your party must include at least one qualified skipper and one experienced crew member. The operator may also ask you to demonstrate your handling of the yacht at sea with a representative aboard, and test time counts as part of your charter.
What if we don't pass the competence check?
If you or your crew can't satisfy the operator, the operator may place a seaman aboard at your expense for as many days as is needed for safety, if one acceptable to both sides is available. The operator may instead end the agreement and keep the charter fees.
Where am I allowed to sail?
You must stay within the Greek seas. Plan your route to reach the farthest port within the first third of your charter, and to be within 40 nautical miles of the return point two days before the end.
Can I sail in strong winds?
You can't leave a port or anchorage if the wind is, or is forecast to be, above Beaufort 6, or if the harbour authorities have banned sailing. Do not sail at night unless all navigation lights work and a proper watch is kept on deck.
How many people can come aboard, and can I use the boat for racing?
Up to 8 people in all at sea, and only people on your crew/passenger manifest. The boat is for private pleasure only, so no racing, no towing other craft except in an emergency, and no subletting.
About Port of Volos
The Port of Volos sits right in the heart of Thessaly's capital, putting you steps away from the city's famous tsipouradika — the waterfront tavernas where locals pair tsipouro shots with endless small plates of seafood. Read more →
When is the best time to sail in Greece?
April–October, hot and dry with the strong northerly Meltemi wind peaking in July–August, especially across the Cyclades.
