Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. You're only responsible for damage it doesn't cover, and that's capped at the security deposit. Operator terms: Yacht is insured for liability and hull damage. Deductible corresponds to amount of deposit agreed on.
How much will fuel cost?
Fuel isn't included — you return the tank full. This boat's ~20 HP engine burn roughly 1.6 L/h while motoring, so a typical week (about 3 h a day, ~21 h) works out to roughly 34 L ≈ €66 at €1.93/L — scale it to your own plans.
Do I need a sailing licence in Portugal?
A recognised sailing licence is required — EU-issued licences and the ICC are accepted; confirm acceptance with the base in advance.
Can I bring an animal on board?
Only with our written permission. Please ask us in advance before planning to bring any animal.
How many people can be on board?
Only the people on the crew list may stay on board on a continual basis, so please make sure everyone in your party is listed.
What condition should the boat be in when I return it?
You return the boat for inspection in good condition. If final cleaning is included in your agreement, the crew should leave it broom-swept with clean dishes and cooking utensils, otherwise we may clean it at your expense.
What if I don't hold the right sailing qualifications myself?
If you don't have the naval knowledge, experience, and permits to sail the boat, you must name a skipper in your crew who does. That skipper shares responsibility with you, and your stated qualifications may be checked by the insurer.
Are there limits on how I can use the boat?
Yes. You may not carry goods for payment, and towing other vessels is only allowed to help a ship in distress when no other rescue is possible. If you ever need to be towed yourself, agree the fee before accepting assistance.
When is the best time to sail in Portugal?
May–October along the Algarve and to Madeira/Azores; mild Atlantic conditions with steady northerly Nortada winds in high summer.
