Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. For damage it doesn't cover, your liability is usually limited to the security deposit, except where the operator's terms say otherwise. Operator terms: The operator provides hull insurance at $38.00 per day (maximum $400 per charter) and third party liability insurance (bodily injury and property damage) limited to US$2,000,000 per accident or occurrence.
How much will fuel cost?
Fuel isn't included — you return the tank full. Estimated from engine power: this boat's ~120 HP engines burn roughly 9.6 L/h while motoring, so a typical week (about 3 h a day, ~21 h) works out to roughly 202 L ≈ €287 at €1.42/L — scale it to your own plans.
Do I need a sailing licence in British Virgin Islands?
Not if you add a skipper — this boat offers one, who holds the licence. Generally, though: No formal sailing licence is required, but you must submit a sailing résumé proving recent experience on a similar-sized yacht for company approval.
Can I sail at night?
No. The yacht can't be operated between one hour before sunset and one hour after sunrise. Insurance doesn't cover any loss or liability arising during those hours.
Where am I allowed to sail?
You can cruise the waters of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Off limits are waters east of Anegada, within three nautical miles of Herman Reefs and the White Horseshoe Reef, the reefs around Anegada, St. Croix, and any other area we designate at handover.
What happens if there's a named storm or severe weather?
For safety we may ask you to vacate the yacht in severe weather. For a named storm, you'll take the yacht to the marine shelter on Tortola as we advise and help prepare it. You'll then move to land accommodation at your own expense at least 24 hours before the storm.
What sailing experience does my crew need?
You must submit a skipper's résumé for our approval and certify it's accurate. Only people we've approved, who have provided a résumé and signed their own copy of the agreement, may command the yacht or dinghy. If your qualifications don't match what you stated, we can put a skipper aboard at your expense.
What should I do if something breaks during my charter?
Call our base right away. It's staffed daily from 08:30 to 17:00, and we'll help by phone or visit by vehicle or chase boat. Please don't attempt repairs without our authorization. A refund applies only if essential equipment like the engine, rigging, sails or windlass isn't fixed within 6 hours, and you must request it at check-out.
When is the best time to sail in British Virgin Islands?
Year-round, with the prime season December–April bringing steady trade winds; June–November is the Atlantic hurricane season.
