Frequently Asked Questions

Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. For damage it doesn't cover, your liability is usually limited to the security deposit, except where the operator's terms say otherwise. Operator terms: The boat insurance covers all maritime risks, including third-party liability. It excludes damage if the client was under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.
How much will fuel cost?
Fuel isn't included — you return the tank full. Estimated from engine power: this boat's ~102 HP engines burn roughly 8.2 L/h while motoring, so a typical week (about 3 h a day, ~21 h) works out to roughly 172 L ≈ €332 at €1.93/L — scale it to your own plans.
Do I need a sailing licence in Portugal?
Not personally — this boat requires a skipper, who holds the licence. Generally, though: A recognised sailing licence is required — EU-issued licences and the ICC are accepted; confirm acceptance with the base in advance.
Can I bring my dog on board?
Animals on board need our consent, so please ask us before you book and we'll let you know.
Are there limits on how I can use the boat?
Yes. You can't rent or lend the boat, use it commercially, fish professionally or enter regattas. Night sailing is only allowed in safe weather conditions.
What happens if something breaks during my charter?
Report any defect to us right away. We'll fix issues that affect safe navigation within 24 hours of your notification, arranging technical help at sea if needed, and we'll try to provide a replacement boat if it takes longer.
What happens if I return the boat late?
Late returns, or returns to a different location without our permission, incur penalties based on how long the delay is. These can be deducted from your security deposit.
What if the base manager thinks I'm not ready to skipper?
As the skipper you confirm you've completed appropriate training. If you don't hold a valid licence, or the base manager considers you unfit to operate the boat, we can assign a professional skipper for safety. This, or sailing with a professional skipper if we deem it necessary, comes at an extra charge.
When is the best time to sail in Portugal?
May–October along the Algarve and to Madeira/Azores; mild Atlantic conditions with steady northerly Nortada winds in high summer.
