Baie Hakahau

Hakahau is the main anchorage for Ua Pou, one of the more dramatic-looking islands in the Marquesas with its jagged volcanic spires shooting up from the jungle. Drop the hook here and you're within easy reach of the village, its striking church, and the island's cargo quay — just be ready for some roll, as the bay is open and exposure can make for an uncomfortable night depending on swell. It's not the most sheltered spot, but it's the go-to stopping point for exploring the island.
