Rocher Saint-Michel

Just outside Saint-Malo's walls, this rocky site hides one of France's strangest art works: around 300 figures carved into a granite cliff by a hermit priest, Abbé Fouré, who turned to sculpture after a stroke robbed him of speech in the late 1800s. The carvings tell the wild legend of the Rothéneuf family — corsairs, pirates, and rogues — and took him over 25 years to complete. It's a paid entry (€5/person, cash, no family deals), but genuinely unlike anything else you'll find on this stretch of coast.
