The basement halls of Diocletian's Palace are one of the best-preserved ancient Roman complexes anywhere in the world — largely because they were sealed and forgotten for centuries, used as a dump, until excavations revealed them almost intact. Walking through these vaulted underground chambers gives you a 1:1 mirror image of the imperial living quarters that once stood directly above. It's genuinely eerie and impressive, and unlike most Roman ruins, there's enough structure here to actually understand the scale of how the emperor lived.
