Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. You're only responsible for damage it doesn't cover, and that's capped at the security deposit. Operator terms: Charterer responsible for all loss or damage to yacht and equipment occurring during charter.
How much will fuel cost?
Fuel isn't included, and on a powerboat it's the biggest variable cost. At a typical planing cruise this boat's 457 HP engine burn roughly 69 L/h — about €135 an hour at €1.95/L. It depends heavily on speed: easing off the throttle cuts it sharply, running flat out raises it. Plan your fuel around the hours and speed you expect to cruise.
Do I need a sailing licence in Greece?
Two crew with proof of competence are required — a skipper holding an ICC or national equivalent and a co-skipper who signs a declaration of sailing experience.
Might we be asked to show our sailing skills at handover?
Yes. We may ask you and your crew to demonstrate competent handling and navigation by taking the yacht out with our representative aboard. If we are not satisfied, we can place a skipper on board for as long as we feel is needed for safety, at your cost, with that time counting as part of the charter.
Where can we sail and how many people can come aboard?
You can cruise within Greek seas, with up to ten people aboard and only those listed on the crew list. The boat may not be taken outside Greek waters or sublet without our written consent.
Are there uses of the boat that are not allowed?
Yes. The boat is for your private pleasure only, with no racing, no towing other vessels except in an emergency, and no commercial use. Please also never take or search for objects of archaeological value or breach fishing laws.
What are the rules in heavy weather?
Please do not leave port or anchorage when the wind is, or is forecast to be, over force 7 on the Beaufort scale, when the authorities have banned sailing, or while any vital gear is damaged or fuel reserves are low. Avoid night sailing unless all navigation lights work and you keep a proper watch.
How should we plan our route to get back on time?
Please plan so you reach your farthest port within the first third of the charter, and are within 40 nautical miles of the return base two days before the end. Keep the log book up to date and check in with us by phone at reasonable intervals.
When is the best time to sail in Greece?
April–October, hot and dry with the strong northerly Meltemi wind peaking in July–August, especially across the Cyclades.
