Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. You're only responsible for damage it doesn't cover, and that's capped at the security deposit. Operator terms: Owner insures yacht and equipment against fire, marine and collision risks, third party damage, and all loss or damage per Greek law. Charterer relieved of liability for insured losses except those caused by charterer's negligence or wilful default.
Do I need a sailing licence in Greece?
Two crew with proof of competence are required — a skipper holding an ICC or national equivalent and a co-skipper who signs a declaration of sailing experience.
What sailing experience does my crew need?
This is a bareboat charter, so your party should include at least one qualified skipper and one experienced sailor. We may ask you and your crew to demonstrate your competence by taking the yacht out to sea with our representative aboard before you set off on your own.
What happens if we don’t pass the sailing competence check?
If we’re not satisfied with how your crew handles the yacht, we can either end the agreement or, by mutual consent, place a skipper aboard at your expense for as long as we feel is needed for safety. Any time spent on this test counts as part of your charter period.
Are there weather limits on when we can leave port?
For safety, you must not leave port or anchorage when the wind is, or is forecast to be, over Beaufort force 6, or if the harbour authorities have banned sailing. You also shouldn’t sail at night without all navigation lights working and a sufficient watch on deck.
How may I use the yacht, and where can I sail?
The yacht is for your private pleasure only – no racing or towing other craft except in emergencies, and no subletting without our written consent. You should stay within Greek waters and never carry more people than the yacht’s documents allow.
Is there any guidance on planning my itinerary?
Yes – please plan so you reach your farthest port of call within the first third of the charter, and so that two days before the end you are no more than 40 nautical miles from the return point. You’re also asked to keep the yacht’s log up to date and report your position and the yacht’s condition to us at reasonable intervals.
When is the best time to sail in Greece?
April–October, hot and dry with the strong northerly Meltemi wind peaking in July–August, especially across the Cyclades.
