Frequently Asked Questions

Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. You're only responsible for damage it doesn't cover, and that's capped at the security deposit. Operator terms: Charterer is responsible for all damages regardless of cause and must immediately inform owner.
How much will fuel cost?
Fuel isn't included — you return the tank full. This boat's ~75 HP engine burn roughly 6 L/h while motoring, so a typical week (about 3 h a day, ~21 h) works out to roughly 126 L ≈ €243 at €1.93/L — scale it to your own plans.
Do I need a sailing licence in Portugal?
A recognised sailing licence is required — EU-issued licences and the ICC are accepted; confirm acceptance with the base in advance.
Where am I allowed to sail?
You may sail within Azorean territorial waters. Any exception requires our written permission in advance.
Are there restrictions on how I can use the boat?
Yes. You may not sail at night, take part in any competition, use the boat commercially, sublet or lend it, bring pets aboard, or carry more people than the crew list allows. You should also only sail in safe weather conditions.
Will my sailing experience be checked before departure?
Yes. We can refuse to let the boat leave the marina if the skipper doesn't show enough experience on arrival, and the boat must stay in port until a suitable skipper is arranged and accepted.
What condition should the boat be returned in?
Please return the boat on time at the agreed place, clean and tidy, undamaged, and with full fuel tanks. If a tank isn't full, the cost to refill it is deducted from the deposit.
What should I do if there's damage or a breakdown during the charter?
Inform us immediately of any damage or breakdown and follow our instructions. Note it in the ship's log, and only carry out repairs once we've agreed them with you in writing, otherwise the cost may not be refunded.
When is the best time to sail in Portugal?
May–October along the Algarve and to Madeira/Azores; mild Atlantic conditions with steady northerly Nortada winds in high summer.
