Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. You're only responsible for damage it doesn't cover, and that's capped at the security deposit. Operator terms: Owner insures yacht and equipment against fire, marine and collision risks, third party damage and any loss or damage per Greek law. Charterer relieved of liability for covered losses unless caused by gross negligence or willful default.
Do I need a sailing licence in Greece?
Two crew with proof of competence are required — a skipper holding an ICC or national equivalent and a co-skipper who signs a declaration of sailing experience.
Does my crew need sailing experience?
Yes. Your party must include at least one qualified skipper and one experienced sailor. We rely on the sailing competence you declare, and any errors in that declaration can end the charter.
Will you check our sailing competence before we set off?
We may. The operator or a representative can ask you and your crew to demonstrate that you can handle and navigate the yacht safely at sea. If they aren't satisfied, they may place a skipper aboard at your cost for as long as needed, with that time counting as part of your charter.
Are there any restrictions on how we can use the yacht?
The yacht is for your private pleasure only. You may not use her for racing or for towing other craft (except in an emergency), and you can't sublet her or carry more people than her papers allow without our written consent.
Can we sail outside the Greek seas?
No, not without our prior written agreement. Please also plan your route so you reach the farthest port within the first third of the charter and are within 40 nautical miles of the return base two days before the end.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
For your safety, you should not leave port or anchorage if the wind is, or is forecast to be, over force 6 on the Beaufort scale, or if the port authorities have prohibited sailing. Please also avoid sailing at night without all navigation lights working and a proper watch on deck.
When is the best time to sail in Greece?
April–October, hot and dry with the strong northerly Meltemi wind peaking in July–August, especially across the Cyclades.
