Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. For damage it doesn't cover, your liability is usually limited to the security deposit, except where the operator's terms say otherwise. You can lower the deposit by adding the operator’s damage waiver. Operator terms: The yachts have full comprehensive insurance and third-party liability cover with an excess, and the premium is included in the charter fee. The policy covers damage to the yacht, its accessories and dependencies, theft of parts or of the whole boat, and hijacking.
How much will fuel cost?
Fuel isn't included — you return the tank full. Estimated from engine power: this boat's ~58 HP engines burn roughly 4.6 L/h while motoring, so a typical week (about 3 h a day, ~21 h) works out to roughly 97 L ≈ €141 at €1.45/L — scale it to your own plans.
Do I need a sailing licence in United States?
Not if you add a skipper — this boat offers one, who holds the licence. Generally, though: Requirements vary by state and operator; no national sailing licence exists, so charter companies rely on a detailed sailing résumé (some states require a boater education card).
Are there limits on how I can use the boat?
The boat is for pleasure sailing only. You can't use it commercially, for professional fishing, to carry passengers or goods for payment, or for regattas and races unless we authorise it. You also can't lend it or sublet it to anyone else.
Can I sail at night or anchor wherever I like?
Entering or leaving harbours, marinas and bays at night is strictly forbidden, so plan to arrive before dark. You also must never approach the windward coast of any island. You need to complete customs and immigration clearance every time you arrive at or leave an island state.
What happens if a hurricane or bad weather is forecast?
During hurricane season you must listen to the local weather forecast on VHF every day. If a depression or hurricane is announced, sail immediately to the nearest harbour, marina or hurricane shelter. If you don't follow these guidelines, you are fully responsible for any incident or damage.
What sailing experience does my crew need?
You must be at least 22 and confirm that you have the experience to match your sailing plan and know how to operate the yacht. If we judge at handover that you aren't competent enough, even with licences, you'll need to take a professional skipper at your own cost. Otherwise the charter is cancelled without refund.
What should I do if something breaks during my charter?
For normal wear and tear, you can arrange a repair or replacement yourself if it costs no more than 10% of the security deposit and isn't due to carelessness. We reimburse it against invoices. For anything more expensive, call us first.
When is the best time to sail in United States?
Varies widely by region; the Florida Keys and Caribbean coast run year-round, while New England and the Pacific Northwest peak June–September.
